Is it true that what our mind thinks, our body feels?…

Neve in the oceanWhat causes us to become ill at the most inopportune times? Why is it that students become ill with tonsillitis or a cold at exam time? The higher our stress levels, the more susceptible we seem to become to illnesses. During July this year (Our Winter here in the Southern Hemisphere), I became ill during the most busy period of the month. I was not able to work for two days and my business partner had to carry the load of work for the two of us.

This again made me ponder on why this happens. Deb Shapiro, in “Your Body Speaks Your Mind” says “excessive stress has a direct effect on the immune system, as it lowers the ability to destroy invading viruses and bacteria through the production of adrenaline and cortisol.” Now this made total sense to me as I had seen it time after time within myself. At the times when I needed to function at my best, I would get sick with a cold or have a severe sinus attack.

As I learnt more about the power of our minds over our bodies, I also learnt the tools that can help us alleviate the levels of stress under which we live.

  1. Meditation: Simple mindfulness meditation. Being aware of our breath and taking the time to sit still for at least 20 minutes (Not an easy task for many of us)
  2. Reiki: This simple tool reduces our stress levels immensely. The more Reiki we practice (or experience) the more balanced our minds and bodies become.
  3. Healthy eating: We may have different dietary needs from each other, but we know when we are eating something that is bad for us…Our bodies feel the pain, or the heaviness of it.
  4. Exercise: Whether we are athletic or not, exercise is vital. Our sedentary lifestyle leads to health issues that our ancestors knew nothing of. So whether you need a lot of exercise, or a simple walk around the block, get moving!

Our health is our responsibility. There are times when we are mean to our bodies and push them beyond their limits…Just for today, let us be more mindful of what we are doing and be conscious of caring for ourselves on every level.

The Universal laws in action…

labyrinthThis morning during my spiritual development time, I read the following which reminded me of the importance of living by universal laws rather than the laws put before us by the world. This is what it said…

“If we want to live the life of Truth, we must obey the Universal
laws. Our well-being or otherwise depends on whether
we do or do not abide by them.”

So I took a look back at what I had learned a while ago about Universal Laws. It was written by Deepak Chopra. I have a habit of forgetting what I have learned and then trying to reinvent the wheel. Yet, these laws are so relevant to our everyday life, to living in a way that is loving to ourselves, to others and the Creator.

We as human beings function according to the truths and rules of society and those we made ourselves while growing up. Our souls obey only the laws of the universe, also known as the spiritual laws. If our truths and those of the universe are not in alignment, it creates frustration, obstacles, stagnation or literally a cosmic slap in the face.  The laws of the universe are based on Love.

Most of our human truths are based in fear and fear is the root of all evil. The moment we integrate more of the universal truths into our life, the more we flow with our soul purpose and with the energies of the universe.

Deepak Chopra speaks of these Universal laws:
1. The law of willingness
2. The law of resistance
3. The law of action
4. The law of request
5. The law of gratitude
6. The law of attention
7. The law of attraction

I would suggest that you write what you think each of these laws means for you and over the next couple of weeks we will look at what it is we have found out. Breathe in…Breathe out…Aah!

breathe in and outToday I would like to focus on our breath. We take our breathing for granted and yet without breathing, we do not live. (Obvious, I know, but then why do we breathe so badly, robbing our bodies of vital, life giving oxygen?)

Through breath control we can regulate and direct the flow of energy through our body and auric field. Any good exercise includes breath regulation. Healers breath strongly and deeply to increase their energy and power for healing.

Many people in today’s world do not breathe deeply and use only the upper chest for breathing. This keeps the energy field weaker than it could be. Deep breathing from our diaphragm is automatic in children, but as we begin to block our feelings, so we cut down on our breath. Holding our breath or dampening our breath is the best way to stop feelings and to anaesthetize ourselves. The lungs are associated with freedom. If we dampen our breathing or let the chest collapse, we feel sadness. Our shallow breathing is related to our feelings of being trapped in a world we cannot control and feel very unsafe and unfulfilled in.

Breathing fully and deeply with our diaphragms helps us feel the power to regain our freedom and works to release the spirit of fear in which we are all held in this age.

alternate breathingA simple breathing exercise:
Stand with your knees bent, legs at shoulder width, so that your knees come over your feet; or sit upright in a chair with only the lower part of your back supported.
Relax.
With your right index finger, hold your left nostril closed. Take a deep breath in through your right nostril.
Hold it.
Close your right nostril with your right thumb and release your index finger from your left nostril. Now breathe out through the left nostril.
Hold your breath.
Close your left nostril with your right index finger.
Release your right nostril and breathe out.
Repeat this breathing while pulling your diaphragm down so that your lower abdomen thrusts out on your in breath filling your whole chest with air.
Now you can add a simple mantra if you choose for each in and out breath – freedom, power, health.
When you get used to the feeling of deep breathing, you can do it through both nostrils any time.
Hopefully, it will become a healthy habit.

But in Reiki, a principle we learn is: Just for today I will not anger. What can possibly be meant by this? How can this be possible when there are so many issues that create such deep anger?

Anger arises mostly out of the feeling that you have lost control; when you become angry with someone or something you feel that you will regain it in some measure. But the truth is, we are powerless over people, places and things. How we react to situations can either add fuel to a roaring fire or can deprive the issue of oxygen and bring a degree of peace.

If you observe your anger as it arises you will see that it reflects something about you that needs attention, rather than a shortcoming in the person with whom you are angry.This seems impossible in the light of some of the issues that cause the anger, but if truth be told, I know that I am quite capable of being destructive and I am the only one I can do something about.

So…Become an observer of your anger (just for today) before you express it and you may just realise there isn’t anything to be angry about.

Aura spraysIn this article, I will focus on 3 plants: Helichrysum splendidum (Everlasting), Boswelia carteri (Frankincense), and Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender).

A hydrosol is the water that is left from the steam distillation of plants or resins, to gather the essential oil. This water contains traces of the properties which are found in the essential oils. Because of this they prove to be excellent room sprays, skin toners, and waters which are added to medicinal and cosmetic creams.

How is this information relevant to us as Reiki practitioners or subtle energy healers?

Often, as light workers, if we are in a vulnerable state, we forget to protect ourselves from the negativity of those around us. We may find that suddenly we are feeling exhausted and negative, as though a dark cloud has descended on our bodies. At times like these we have a variety of options: Deep meditative breathing, self-Reiki, using the cutting-the-chords technique, using smudge sticks or incense sticks to clear our personal spaces, and so on. Aura cleansing using hydrosols is a powerful, and helpful tool.

“Give thanks for every living thing…Including ourselves!…

gratitudeOne of the five precepts that we learn in Reiki is: “Give thanks for every living thing.” Here is a video which Pedram Shojai and his team have made available for free for a limited time. It is called Origin.

While watching it, some thoughts that came to mind are:

* Am I living in gratitude with all that lives on this planet?
and
* Am I living in gratitude and treating my body as the intricate part of this ecosystem that it is?

I encourage you to take the time and watch this movie. It is just over and hour and a half long, so watch when you know you will not be interrupted.
