Life has a way of getting you where you need to be…

Self-reiki-footI often get asked the question: Why do you practice Reiki? What does it actually do for you? Well, this time I would like to answer that question from a more personal point of view.

A big part of Reiki is self Reiki. A person who has done the first level of Reiki is encouraged to do self Reiki as a daily discipline. Doing this on a daily basis helps keep me in a balanced state. It also keeps me mindful of this present moment and helps me to stay present to what is happening now without me constantly living in the past with such words as “Remember when we…” or “If only…”. Or projecting into the future with such words as “What if…?” or “Maybe…”.  Yesterday has gone, tomorrow still has to be unwrapped, but I am here in this eternal moment.

Over the past nine years, I have slowly gotten better at practising regularly, and those weeks when I keep to the discipline of self Reiki on a daily basis, I am able to remain present to whatever life has to teach me. To remain calmer, more caring and more open and accepting of others.

This gentle, hands on, technique has helped me to learn from my mistakes, to curb my anger and to be compassionate with myself as I continue to learn and grow in this life.

“How Do I know If You Are The Right Reiki Practitioner or Teacher for me?

Reiki teacher practitionerThis question is asked often and it is a very good one to ask. For me, one of the best features of Reiki is that it empowers us on every level. We take our lives into our own hands, so to speak, and realise that if we want to live healthy well lives, we need to know more about what is right for us. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and here are a few good questions to start with.

Here are some more questions that can get you started, whether you are considering experiencing a Reiki session, or whether you are wanting to learn Reiki for yourself.

1. What is Reiki?

A Reiki Teacher/Practitioner will be able to tell you in a few short sentences, what Reiki is. For example: “Reiki healing is a natural therapy that gently balances life energies and brings health and well being to the recipient. ”

2. Does Reiki have healing benefits?

One of the greatest Reiki healing health benefits is stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the bodies natural healing abilities, and improves and maintains health.

We don’t need to sell the benefits of Reiki.

3. What is your Reiki lineage?

This question is very important as a Reiki practitioner should be able to trace him/herself back to Dr Mikao Usui.

4. Are you registered with your local Reiki Association?

This question may seem pedantic, but if the Reiki practitioner/teacher is registered, then you have the peace of mind that s/he is willing to follow a code of ethics while teaching or practising Reiki.

If a practitioner/teacher is practising daily Reiki, s/he is walking his/her talk. You will see it in the person’s attitude and way of life.

A True Reiki Story…Back Trouble…

reiki healing 3A friend of mine has for many years suffered with back problems, which has been exacerbated by osteoporosis. In June 2005, her back had become so bad that the doctor recommended 12 cortisone injections directly into the lumbar bones. She was also told that she would need to rely on a neck and back brace to help ease the pain. He said that she would need to have these injections every 6 months. It was not an option to operate because of the osteoporosis.

At this time I was a new Reiki student, and asked her if I could please practice on her. She willingly agreed. She went overseas in the July for a month, and I asked if I could please practice distance healing on her, again, she willingly agreed.

healing energy lightWhen she returned from her trip, she said that she had woken up some mornings feeling well. We worked out that it had been those mornings when healing had been sent. We continued once a week, and now, once a month with Reiki treatments. To date, she has not had to have any more cortisone injections. She began exercising gently, and then about 2 years ago (2012) she started aqua exercising twice a week, and doing core muscle exercises every morning. This wonderful lady no longer wears the braces, and she can work in the garden, go for walks and pick up medium weight boxes. The doctor had told her she would always need to be careful to avoid placing too much strain on her back. Her osteoporosis has been arrested-not getting any worse. Her entire outlook on life has changed from those dismal days in 2005.

With Reiki we put no emphasis on the outcome of each session. The energy works where it is most needed. Yet it is stories like this that remind us that if our energy fields are strong and supported, we can and do feel the physical benefits.

hands, based on simple, ancient healing techniques. It is based on the
belief that, by channelling spiritual energy through the practitioner, the
spirit is healed and the spirit, in turn, heals the physical body. According
to proponents, it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages,
detoxifies the system, and provides new vitality in the form of healing
universal life.

The ancient practice of Reiki (pronounced ray-key, a Japanese word for
“Universal Life Force”) has recently become popular again as people look for
new ways of spiritual healing to compliment their lifestyles. It is a system
of natural healing that channels this “life force” through the hands.

The traditional Asian medical paradigm sees injury, dysfunction and disease
as a manifestation of weak or out-of-balance body energies. Reiki accesses
the source of Life to heal the self and others on spiritual, mental,
emotional and physical levels. Reiki allows the source of well-being to
enhance and balance natural life forces through non-intrusive therapeutic

It is claimed that Reiki augments and accelerates the healing process. It
may be effective in cases that do not respond to other forms of treatment
and in conjunction with any other therapeutic modality. Many believe that
creative energy is the essence of all healing. The famed humanitarian, Dr.
Albert Schweitzer, said, “We physicians do nothing, we only help and
encourage the physician within”.

Reiki is a spiritual power that came with the Buddha’s enlightenment. He
gave that gift to his students along with meditation techniques that were
the means of his self-realisation.

In the late 1800’s a specific formula for accessing Universal Life Force was
discovered in some Sanskrit writings by a scholar seeking knowledge of what
the Buddha taught about healing. Mikao Usui realised that the experience of
God is more essential to fulfilment of the purpose of life than the power of

The experience of Reiki is a vehicle used to become conscious of your own
being, regardless of faith or concepts. The ability to channel healing
energy through the hands is awakened through a series of direct transmission
initiations that attune and align energy centres in the body and hands.
Reiki is not a system of religious beliefs.

Among the benefits claimed by its practitioners are:

* Stress and pain relief

* Relaxation of muscle spasms

* Releasing “emotional blockages”

* Accelerating natural healing

* Stimulation the immune system

* It may be used in conjunction with any other therapeutic modality

* It is completely safe and benign

While medical doctors lend no scientific credence to practises like Reiki,
many would agree that anything that promotes calmness and sense of well
being will not damage a patient’s path to wellness, especially when used
together with conventional medicine

What can I expect to experience after a Reiki Session?…

healing energy lightImmediately after a session you may experience: –
Heightened emotions
You may feel quiet and not want company
You may feel tired
These are normal after a large energetic shift has taken place, and they should return to normal within a few days.

Some things I may notice after my Reiki Session:
In the days and weeks ahead, pay particular attention to things like:-

Issues you came to address. Diarise these.
Do you feel more relaxed?
Do you feel more peaceful and less upset by everyday issues?
Do you feel more tolerant?
Is your breathing more relaxed?

After a session
Drink plenty of water for the rest of today, and over the next 3 days, rather drink water to quench your thirst than tea, coffee or cold drinks.
You may experience a change in bowel movement within the next couple of days-softer or looser-this is part of the emotional shifting and release taking place.
You may find detoxification symptoms occurring within the next 24-48 hours period. You may feel somewhat uncomfortable. A true healing crisis is when one or more of the following symptoms are experienced: –
Cold or Flu-like symptoms
Temporary skin rash
Diarrhoea, odorous or discoloured stools
This is caused by the release of dis-ease causing toxins. This process should be supported rather than suppressed.

Follow up sessions:
To maintain a healthy energy system, it is advised that you have Reiki at least once a month.
