Is it true that what our mind thinks, our body feels?…

Neve in the oceanWhat causes us to become ill at the most inopportune times? Why is it that students become ill with tonsillitis or a cold at exam time? The higher our stress levels, the more susceptible we seem to become to illnesses. During July this year (Our Winter here in the Southern Hemisphere), I became ill during the most busy period of the month. I was not able to work for two days and my business partner had to carry the load of work for the two of us.

This again made me ponder on why this happens. Deb Shapiro, in “Your Body Speaks Your Mind” says “excessive stress has a direct effect on the immune system, as it lowers the ability to destroy invading viruses and bacteria through the production of adrenaline and cortisol.” Now this made total sense to me as I had seen it time after time within myself. At the times when I needed to function at my best, I would get sick with a cold or have a severe sinus attack.

As I learnt more about the power of our minds over our bodies, I also learnt the tools that can help us alleviate the levels of stress under which we live.

  1. Meditation: Simple mindfulness meditation. Being aware of our breath and taking the time to sit still for at least 20 minutes (Not an easy task for many of us)
  2. Reiki: This simple tool reduces our stress levels immensely. The more Reiki we practice (or experience) the more balanced our minds and bodies become.
  3. Healthy eating: We may have different dietary needs from each other, but we know when we are eating something that is bad for us…Our bodies feel the pain, or the heaviness of it.
  4. Exercise: Whether we are athletic or not, exercise is vital. Our sedentary lifestyle leads to health issues that our ancestors knew nothing of. So whether you need a lot of exercise, or a simple walk around the block, get moving!

Our health is our responsibility. There are times when we are mean to our bodies and push them beyond their limits…Just for today, let us be more mindful of what we are doing and be conscious of caring for ourselves on every level.

Blessings, love and light to you.

Sue

Breathe in…Breathe out…Aah!

breathe in and outToday I would like to focus on our breath. We take our breathing for granted and yet without breathing, we do not live. (Obvious, I know, but then why do we breathe so badly, robbing our bodies of vital, life giving oxygen?)

Through breath control we can regulate and direct the flow of energy through our body and auric field. Any good exercise includes breath regulation. Healers breath strongly and deeply to increase their energy and power for healing.

Many people in today’s world do not breathe deeply and use only the upper chest for breathing. This keeps the energy field weaker than it could be. Deep breathing from our diaphragm is automatic in children, but as we begin to block our feelings, so we cut down on our breath. Holding our breath or dampening our breath is the best way to stop feelings and to anaesthetize ourselves. The lungs are associated with freedom. If we dampen our breathing or let the chest collapse, we feel sadness. Our shallow breathing is related to our feelings of being trapped in a world we cannot control and feel very unsafe and unfulfilled in.

Breathing fully and deeply with our diaphragms helps us feel the power to regain our freedom and works to release the spirit of fear in which we are all held in this age.

alternate breathingA simple breathing exercise:
Stand with your knees bent, legs at shoulder width, so that your knees come over your feet; or sit upright in a chair with only the lower part of your back supported.
Relax.
With your right index finger, hold your left nostril closed. Take a deep breath in through your right nostril.
Hold it.
Close your right nostril with your right thumb and release your index finger from your left nostril. Now breathe out through the left nostril.
Hold your breath.
Close your left nostril with your right index finger.
Release your right nostril and breathe out.
Repeat this breathing while pulling your diaphragm down so that your lower abdomen thrusts out on your in breath filling your whole chest with air.
Now you can add a simple mantra if you choose for each in and out breath – freedom, power, health.
When you get used to the feeling of deep breathing, you can do it through both nostrils any time.
Hopefully, it will become a healthy habit.

Self Healing first…Really?

bodiesWhen students learn Reiki, it comes as a surprise to learn that healing starts with us.

The very first thing we do is learn that we can heal ourselves. That has not been a concept that we have learned from our outside world. Out there we are taught that someone else has to fix every sniffle and snuffle; every headache and backache. Now we are taught that our bodies first line of defense should be to keep ourselves balanced, to be aware of our self talk-what we think is what we do (or what we believe).

So, when we learn Reiki, we start by learning self Reiki. Placing our hands on specific parts of our bodies – relating to our energy centres (Chakras and acu-points). These positions were taught by the founder of this specific method of subtle energy healing, Dr Mikao Usui.

Our healing quest begins with ourselves.

Having a peaceful and blessed week.

Much love and light

Feeling anxious…worried…fearful…? How Reiki has helped others…

self-reiki-solar plexusWhen I started learning Reiki, the thing that intrigued me the most was how calm my Reiki teacher was. My fellow student and myself would arrive for lessons harassed and with a hundred and one reasons why it was impossible to practise self Reiki for a full hour every day. The teacher would just smile and encourage us to give it our concerted effort for at least twenty-one days.

Looking back at that time, I can feel compassion for my younger self. In this world of quick fixes and instant access, it is challenging to slow ourselves down, to take a moment to breathe. It is even more difficult to spend time alone with ones self and give love and compassion which is directed within.

The most encouraging and exciting news that I can give you today is that it really does work. With perseverance, and a little bit of self-love, the daily self Reiki becomes a good and healthy habit. The positive outcome of a daily dose of self Reiki is that fears, worries and anxieties subside.

If you would like to learn how to do self Reiki, my next class begins on the second Sunday in July. The classes are once a week for 7 weeks. The lessons include basic energy healing (learning more detail about chakras, auras and meridians) and Reiki 1.

“It has to be the Reiki!”

feet and reikiToday I received a very positive, Reiki affirming letter from a past Reiki client who became a student and has now continued on her chosen path of healing… Reiki is life-giving on all levels. Thank you Jessica for sharing.

No one can say it better than Jessica herself…

Hi Sue,

As per our discussion on my facebook post:

I would really like to thank you for your training in Reiki, and assistance in tuning me in energetically; and guiding me to connect to intuition, body, mind, and soul.

Though I was trained on how to pick up on physical problems in Reflexology, I truly do believe that my Reiki training has laid an incredible foundation for my Reflexology; and possibly also for any other alternative therapies that I may learn in future!

When I started my case studies I was excited and anxious, thinking “Okay, I’m going to have to be patient here, I’m sure I will start picking up the signs with more and more practise”.  However, I was astounded at the rate that I was tuning in from the first client!  And…I was able to often give detailed accuracy on physical problems as I worked on their feet.

JessicaI thought to myself, “It has to be the Reiki!”

Thank you so much for all you have taught me Sue.  I would like for you to please share my account with your students, old and new. Training in energy healing can be very helpful in other hands on modalities.

Much Appreciated!
Jess

Energize your space…Which colours do I need?…

Chakra candles 3Colour is essential for our health. We need all the colours to be emotionally, physically and spiritually well. Each colour vibrates at its own frequency and plays a specific role in our well-being.

Here follows the seven basic colours of the rainbow and how each colour contains different properties for health.

Red: Vitality, Courage, Self-confidence, Stimulation, Energy, Assertiveness.
Use when you need to meet a demanding day, or when you feel drained of energy. The colour red provides the power from the earth and gives energy on all levels. It connects us to our physical body. Everything that is to be commenced needs the life vitality of red.

ORANGE: Happiness, Confidence, Resourcefulness, Warmth, Optimism, Creativity.
Brings joy to our workday and strengthens our appetite for life! Orange is the best emotional stimulant. It connects us to our senses and helps to remove inhibitions and makes us independent and social.

YELLOW: Wisdom, Clarity, Self-esteem, Joy, Success, Mental Clarity.
Gives us clarity of thought, increases awareness, and stimulates interest and curiosity. Yellow energy is related to the ability to perceive and understand. The yellow energy connects us to our mental self.

GREEN: Balance, Love, Self control, Nature, Harmony, Heart.
Cleanses and balances our energy, to give a feeling of renewal, peace and harmony. Green connects us to unconditional love and is used for balancing our whole being.

BLUE: Knowledge, Health, Decisiveness, Communication, Truth, Loyalty.
This is a mentally-relaxing colour. Blue has a pacifying effect on the nervous system and brings great relaxation. Ideal for sleep problems, and hyper-active children. Connects us to holistic thought, and gives us wisdom and clarity, enhancing communication and speech.

INDIGO: Intuition, Mysticism, Understanding.
The indigo energy connects us to our unconscious self, and gives us the experience of being part of the whole universe. Strengthens intuition, imagination, psychic powers, and increases dream activity.

VIOLET: Beauty, Creativity, Inspiration.
The violet energy connects us to our spiritual self bringing guidance, wisdom and inner strength. It enhances artistic talent and creativity.

There are of course exceptions to these colours. You may have a negative memory associated with a specific colour, and so it may mean something different to you. But that is a whole story on its own.

Chakra candles: I use the chakra candles when I want to bring more of a certain colour into my awareness, or when I have friends or clients requesting Distance Reiki for specific difficulties in their lives (Physical, Emotional, Mental or Spiritual).
Chakra candles 1
Here is one example of how I use all the candles together. The rose quartz in the centre represents the people that I am sending Distance Reiki to (It really is just a visual reminder for me). When sending to more than one person, or to a person who is very ill, I light all the candles in sequence from the purple down to the red.

Another way in which I use the candles is when I am wanting specific help on a particular day. And on a day like today, writing blogs and trying to be ‘Oh so creative’, this yellow candle helps clear the mind and bring mental clarity.

There is so much more that can said about about colour and chakras, but we will leave that for another day.

Sending lots of Reiki love from me to you.

Sue
